We are currently seeking a class of 20 students from District 23, in grades Pre-K to 3rd grade with reading difficulties to participate in observational and experimental studies to develop an efficient RTI (Route to Intervention Model) to increase reading achievement in order to reach grade-level targets.
Starting with a prescriptive diagnostic, Tier 1 instruction will use an evidence-based core literacy curriculum that provides code-focused instruction in phonics. phonological awareness, and decoding strategies. These interventions are provided in dynamic, differentiated, and flexible small groups. Class-wide peer tutoring is a tier 1 strategy to empower young learners to play a larger role.
Our research goals are multi-tiered and include the following: 1. Improve reading, 2. Reduce the strain on the NYC Department of Education RTI for tier 2 and tier 3 services. 3. Test RTI models in the context of effective instruction, progress monitoring, and interventions.
